SHRI CHH RAJARAM SAHAKARI SAKHAR KARAKHANA LTD KASABA BAWADA KOLHAPUR

The Kolhapur Sugar Mills Ltd. (Pvt.Ltd.) was established in 1932-33.  In 1973 the Sugar Undertaking of the Company was separated and renamed as  ‘The Kolhapur Canesugar Works Ltd.’ The Kolhapur Canesugar Works Ltd.defaulted payment of cane price of the season 1982-83 to the tune of Rs.2.51 Crores and deposite with interest from 1978-79.  The total dues amounted to around Rs. 7.00 Crores. The Management of the Company was reluctant to pay the dues of Cane Growers.
The Uskari Shetkari Sangthana  agitated with the Management of the Company for getting arrears of cane payment and deposits with the keen interest and help rendered by the Govt.of Maharashtra and the relentless efforts of the Sanghatana, the ownership of the Sugar Factory was handed-over to the Co-Operative Sugar Factory Shri Chh.Rajaram Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd formed by the Sanghatana, in lieu of the Cane dues. Thus the Joint Stock Sugar Factory was converted into a full fledged Co-Operative Sugar Factory under the Co-Operative Management.
To assess the value of the K.C.W.Ltd. the Valuation Committee was appointed by the Govt.of Maharashtra under the Chairmanship of the Director of Sugar, Maharashtra State,Pune . The Valuation Committee had valued the entire Unit at Rs.6.66 Crores. An agreement was executed between the Kolhapur Canesugar Works Ltd.and Shri Chhatrapati  Rajaram Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd.on 31st October,1986, to the effect that the latter had taken full responsibility of payment of all dues the former had to pay to the Cane Growers.

The original milling plant was of the Fawcit Presten Make and was scheduled for a crushing rate of 400 tonnes per day. In the year 1957 the factory was sanctioned a further extension from 1000 tonnes to 1700 tonnes per day and subsequently it further extended upto 2200 M.T./per day.  The new milling plant of A.W.Smith Make was erected in the year 1958-59 for higher capacity.
It was immediately after take over of the Unit by the Co-operative Society that the society resolved for expansion to 2750 TCD as a first step with the aim of ultimate expansion upto 3500 TCD.
Recently, Shri Chhatrapati Rajaram Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd.(SCRSSKL) decided to set up Co-Generation Project of 15 M.W.capacity for decentralized generation of exportable/surplus power, mainly from renewable sources of fuels.  The project is proposed to be set up alongwith existing sugar mill at Kasaba Bavada, Tal.Karveer, Dist.Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Shri Chhatrapati Rajaram Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd. (SCRSSKL) is located at Kasaba Bavada, Tal.Karveer, Dist.Kolhapur at about 8 Kilometres from the main Kolhapur City. Geographically it is on the banks of the Panchganga river.  Historically, being the oldest factory in the Kolhapur region, the cane command area of the factory is spread over 120 villages in 7 adjoining talukas.  Cane is the principal crop in the Kolhapur region and due to fertile soil, good irrigation & river water, there is excellent cane availability in normal seasons.
The Karkhana is located in the high recovery zone and due to ample supply of water for irrigation and the nature of soils available in the area of operation, the recovery percentage is of the order of 11.5 %  to 12 % and yield of cane is around 75 to 80 Tons/hectare.
SCRSSKL was initially registered as a sugar plant with a capacity of 400 TCD. The plant was progressively upgraded to 2200 TCD . With few modifications, the karkhana now achieves normal cane crushing of 3200 to 3300 TCD.  i.e. @ 130 to 135 % capacity utilization.  The Karkhana has a target crushing of 4.5 to 5 lacs tons per season and has crushed maximum of 5.75 lacs in the 1995-96 sugar season.
In order to improve the entire sugar cane production, the Karkhana proposes to modernize the plant and remove the bottlenecks at various stations by adding balancing equipment. It is expected that, the modernizing of the plant will reduce the cost of production by saving in chemicals, electric power, bagasse and also manpower.   The karkhana has all infrastructural facility such as water, power, labour, transportation, disposal of effluent etc. to work at the capacity of 3500 TCD.
